Why grit is so important?

Grit is one word many of us would have come across when we look at job descriptions while applying or hear someone talking about it. Why talk about grit at all and why it is so important?

Angela Duckworth is a leading expert on “grit”. She explains grit – is passion and sustained persistence applied toward long-term achievement, with no specific concern for rewards or recognition. It goes along with resilience, ambition, and self-control in the pursuit of long-term goals.

She in her ted talk explains how we need to look beyond IQ in our education. We need to implore and look at what is it that makes an individual stick to their goals despite the challenging situations. She talks about grit in great volumes. Grit is sticking with your future. Grit is living life not a sprint instead of a marathon.

So how we can develop it?

Data shows that by developing a growth mindset one can surely get closer to grit.

Carol Dweck studied human motivation and attempts to bridge between developmental psychology, social psychology, and personality psychology, and examines the self-conceptions.

She draws attention towards a growth mindset which is based on the belief that one’s basic qualities are things he/she/ they can cultivate through efforts.

Here are 3 quick ways to work on it:

  • Dive deeper into authenticity – stick to your uniqueness, it could be something you can do better or your own qualities. Pretending to be somone diminishes who you really are.
  • Be brave at facing your challenges – try looking at those challenges as an opportunity to outgrow your own fears. Each challenge has can add to your experience.
  • Censor your thoughts and words – it is really important to pay attention to your thoughts and words. If your thoughts and words are low how can you expect a positive outcome? The way you speak to yourself is integral to your own value and ethical standard.

Building on grit might be an extra effort. However, once you are in practice, the mental processes work for you, resulting in a greater possibility that you get the results.

Self-improvement for 2020

Imagine – if someone asks you, how would you begin working on self-improvement, what would it be? And, definitely there would be a moment when you would get to the advice you received on it.

Just more and more content on optimisation. Why not, because all of us are striving for getting better and better.

It is not surprising that it all needs efforts and consistency. If you are running your own business, where you would be focusing on innovation and implementation.

Here are 3 things about self improvement-

It is about your journey
Pushing hard would only make you feel sad about your own self. No one has ever excelled by putting a constant reminder of what are the impossibilities of getting what you want. Stay. Hold. Breathe. Begin again. No one can give you the time you need to recuperate but your own self. Wander on some days, follow on other. And for the rest keep exploring what you like, how you like.

Not one shoe goes with all your dresses
Try different ways, just like you would not wear your gym shoes under a dress, similarly don’t stick with one thing. Try things out. Ask yourself what I like, over and over again. Everyday is a new discovery and everyday new things come up. Experiment. Self awareness is not a one day thing. It is crucial to your experiences and learning.

Self-compassion
Ever noticed that smile on your on face when you see your loved one, or when you get what you wanted. Self-compassion is treating yourself in the face of failure the way you would a good friend. Showing yourself kindness and understanding, you are investing in your own well-being.

“Always dream and shoot higher than you know you can do. Do not bother just to be better than your contemporaries or predecessors. Try to be better than yourself.”-William Faulkner

Begin with Attention Management

You must have heard the term “pay attention” since childhood on different instances. Ever wondered – why are you so distracted? So much so that you find it hard to get yourself to focus on the work.

Often, you must have read on topics such as productivity, getting goals accomplished but often missed the essence which lies in attention management.

Attention management is a simple practice of having control over your distractions in the present, and maximising your flow to focus on your potential.

Attention is integral part of personal growth as it has a lot to determine your experiences both inside and outside your home. It helps in a great way to get you closer to accomplishing what you want for yourself. As simple as, preparing your favourite dish, requires your attention.

Attention is like muscles in your body, using them in the right way is important. It puts you in track of your time.

Practising attention consistently is a good way to work around it. As it gets you in a practised routine and get you consistent results.

While looking at the consistency, progressing in it also creates an impact. Notice the time span you are investing in maintaining your attention. No hard and fast rule. You can increase it gradually over a period of time or maintain a fixed one; whatever works for you.

When you lose your attention, noticing that very moment where you lost it, when you lost it, how you lost it, in itself helps you. Noticing and correcting your focus, can be a simple mindfulness technique which can be applied in this case.

Taking control of your attention is the beginning step which can help you to manage your attention in a long run. Take control of your life.

If you wish to read more on it, you can read Focus: The Hidden Driver of Excellence, psychologist Daniel Goleman. He delves into the science of attention.
